The Status of Women in Singapore
The status of women has changed all over the world throughout history. Since starting research on Singapore it has been found that it is not an exception to this. Singapore is a relatively advanced country which gives the same freedoms to women as men. Women receive the same amount of education, can vote, and are able to hold high positions in business settings if they please.
According to an article on WorldBusinessCulture.com, “women in Singapore have made huge advances in the business area over the past decade” (Women in Business, par. 1). Like many other countries, Singapore did not start out with women having the same status as men. Women were encouraged to include themselves in the politics of their country when the People’s Action Party of Singapore decided that they were going to improve the life of women in the country. Soon women were joining in the political aspects of the country. “There were five women who entered Parliament in 1959” (Chew, p.1). This started to allow women to become more successful in many other aspects of their lives.
Women in Singapore are encouraged to go to school and receive a quality education now. Since women are taking the time to get an education before jumping into work, they are receiving larger salaries due to them gaining a career rather than a job after schooling. Not only does this create a stronger person and family, but also a stronger country. A person’s success adds to the success of the country. Singapore is becoming very advanced and successful, which could be due to allowing women the same rights to quality education as men.
Safety is also a benefit of having women at the same status as men in Singapore. Eighty-eight percent of women in Singapore said that they would feel safe walking alone at night while 91% of the men said the same thing. This graph shows many different countries and the amount of people who feel safe. Singapore happens to be in the top five that feel the safest.
This survey from http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2013/03/the-countries-where-women-have-the-best-lives-in-charts/273848/ was taken in 2011. There is a very small gap between the amount of men and women that feel safe in their country. If women felt as though men were superior, they would not feel as safe in their own country. Women would find in much more of a risk to walk alone at night.
In conclusion, the status of women in Singapore has changed due to various reasons. What has resulted from these changes has all been positive for the country of Singapore. Women are becoming more and more successful in this country due to their rights to go to school, get great careers, holding positions in the government, and feeling safe in their country. Singapore women are lucky to have such a great status in their country. Not every country is this lucky, but the women of Singapore are taking advantage of their status and doing great things for the rest of the country.

The Economic System
The Singapore Economic System
Singapore’s economy has been developing very rapidly since they have become independent. The economy relies heavily on the trades that are made with other countries. There is a very low unemployment rate in Singapore, which also helps the economy to thrive. Singapore has low taxes and encourages businesses to come out on top.
Something that makes Singapore’s economic system so great is the open market. Singapore allows many trades and is very competitive. This helps the economy for the entire country. Since Singapore does not have many useful natural resources, trade is extremely important to the country. Singapore does not have much land for agriculture. This creates a need for the large amount of trade they do. They also consider water to be a resource that they do not have enough of. Water is very precious to the people who live in this country. Singapore is the fifteenth top trading partner with the United States of America. Singapore exports things like electronics, chemicals, and services. These are things that they are very skilled at making. They import mineral fuels, consumer goods, and foodstuffs along with a few other main things.
The economic system of Singapore is doing so well because they take the time to evaluate how things are going. Singapore evaluates the economic system every so often and then makes changes that they believe will help the country. Right after becoming an independent nation Singapore had quite a bit of economic trouble. They took a look at what was going on and came up with ideas on how to fix it. Singapore established the Economic Development Board and worked on the economy. A while later Singapore had risen to having 80% of their citizens in the middle class category instead of being low class or living in poverty.

Oil in Singapore
Oil Production: Singapore produces 0 bbl/ day of crude oil. This was the only oil mentioned.
Oil Consumption: In 2011 Singapore consumed 896,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
Earlier in the semester I found that Singapore is an important part of many different trades. Oil is something that Singapore deals a lot with. I found that Singapore is one of the World's top three oil trading and refining places. This is a great thing for Singapore since they don't have many natural resources. I think that this will be good for Singapore and bring them more money. Oil is something that all countries really want, so they may have to go through Singapore to get it. This brings money for the country to use to build safer roads, buildings, and anything else that the citizens may need.
Questions:
1. Is Singapore not capable of producing oil? Does this country have supplies to find any oil that they may have around them?
2. Since Singapore is such an important place for the trade and refining of oil, why do they not produce any to help improve the trade even more?

Economy Summary
Singapore has a quick developing economy. Since Singapore has an open market they encourage trade. This allows a lot of competition which is very important for this country. Singapore is lacking in the amount of natural resources they have, so trade is very important to them. This is the only way that they can strive to be a great country. Singapore also takes the time to find out what works for their economy and what doesn't. They will change what isn't working and focus on what is helping their economy. This helps them have a great economy for the entire country.
